ADMSEP Council

The Executive Council leads ADMSEP. The council combines elected officers, past presidents, and a treasurer. Each role carries specific program and organizational duties.

Leadership progression

ADMSEP has a nine-year leadership progression from council member to past, past, past president. This progression prepares leaders for the presidency and preserves institutional knowledge. New council members are nominated by members (self-nominations encouraged) and selected annually by the Executive Committee.

The Treasurer position, created in 2022, is a council member for a minimum of four years. The role is outside the presidential progression and provides financial oversight for the Administrative Director and Executive Council.

Committees and task forces

Committees are standing groups of ADMSEP members who volunteer to carry out specific ongoing work on behalf of the Executive Council. Chairs are appointed for two-year terms with the option to renew. Chairs lead scheduled meetings, keep minutes, submit twice-yearly reports, and write a summary for the annual newsletter.

Task forces are time-limited groups focused on a specific project. A task force disbands once the work is complete, usually within four years.

History

ADMSEP was formed in 1975 when a small group of psychiatric educators met in Chicago to discuss undergraduate medical education. For an in-depth historical perspective, see the organizational history originally published in Academic Psychiatry, 2007.

Advocacy

ADMSEP supports diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in psychiatric education. Members and allies are invited to contribute to that work through committees and task forces.

Welcome to ADMSEP

Members meet annually in person, plus shorter virtual meetings in the fall and spring. The annual meeting is where colleagues gather to learn from one another and advance the field of medical student education in psychiatry.
