Accessibility statement for CSI eModules

This is an accessibility statement from the ADMSEP Clinical Simulation Initiative (CSI) covering the CSI eModules learning package.

Measures to support accessibility

The CSI Committee takes the following measures to ensure accessibility of CSI eModules:

  • Include accessibility throughout committee policies and peer-review criteria.
  • Assign clear accessibility goals and responsibilities among committee members.
  • Employ formal accessibility quality-assurance methods during module design, development, and peer review.
  • Build modules using Articulate Rise 360, which provides responsive design, keyboard navigation support, and screen-reader compatibility aligned with WCAG 2.1 AA.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) (opens the W3C WAI standards page) define three conformance levels: A, AA, and AAA.

CSI eModules target WCAG 2.1 Level AA and are currently partially conformant. Partial conformance means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard. Known limitations are listed below.

Compatibility with browsers and assistive technology

CSI eModules are designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies:

  • Current versions of NVDA or JAWS on Windows.
  • Current version of VoiceOver on macOS and iOS.

Technical specifications

Accessibility of CSI eModules relies on the following technologies:

  • HTML
  • WAI-ARIA
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • SMIL (for timed content inside modules)

Known limitations

Despite ongoing work, some CSI eModules have the following limitations:

  1. Complex medical diagrams. Some complex medical diagrams may require a high zoom level. Text will reflow, but the image may remain unclear on some devices. This is a known limitation of Articulate Rise 360. Alternative text descriptions are provided for these activities.
  2. Complex interactive elements, such as labelled graphics and drag-and-drop. These features may be difficult to navigate with a keyboard alone, due to known limitations of Rise 360 interactive features. When possible the committee restricts drag-and-drop interactions and exposes a “Text Description” alternative inside the course.

Please contact the committee if you encounter an issue not listed here.

Feedback

We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of CSI eModules. Please let us know if you encounter accessibility barriers:

Assessment approach

The CSI Committee assesses the accessibility of CSI eModules by:

  • Self-evaluation during module development.
  • External evaluation during peer review.
  • A formal quality-assurance process throughout design, development, and peer review.
