The Association of Directors of Medical
Student Education in Psychiatry is
pleased to announce the Junior Faculty
Teaching Award. The purpose of this
award is to recognize a promising early
career ADMSEP member who is already
demonstrating excellence in teaching,
mentoring and curricular innovations.
During these times of decreased funding
and competing priorities for faculty
time, this award will provide an
opportunity for a new educator to be
recognized for his/her accomplishments.
The award includes a plaque and a
monetary honorarium, which hopefully
will be used to help defray costs of
attending the upcoming ADMSEP annual
meeting.
Eligibility: Any full or
part-time Psychiatry faculty member, at
or below the rank of Assistant
Professor, may be nominated by the Chair
or the Chair's designee.
Candidates will be evaluated on the
basis of:
-Quality and breadth of
teaching -Educational endeavors
including administrative
responsibilities, curriculum innovations
and presentations at meetings.
-Awards/recognition of teaching
In addition to the Chair's (or
designee's) nomination letter,
candidates must submit a personal
statement describing their academic
activities and interests and why they
believe this award will assist their
careers. The candidate must also submit
an up to date curriculum vitae and an
Education Portfolio. Those who have
applied before are welcome to reapply.
Only electronic submission
materials will be accepted.
Nominations are due by March 30, 08 and
should be sent by email to: Tamara Gay (
tlgay@umich.edu ) or Beth Weihe (bweihe@med.umich.edu).

the membership at the business meeting
at the conclusion of the annual meeting
in Park City, Utah on June 23, 2007. All

increase is needed to offset increasing
administrative and meeting expenses, as
well as increased expenses related to
ADMSEP’s involvement with other liaison
organizations. For more information

Dear Colleague:
ADMSEP was

provide support for psychiatric faculty
responsible for medical student

throughout the year via our active
list-serve discussions and meet annually
to exchange ideas in a collegial
atmosphere. The Annual Meeting formats
include 75-minute plenary
presentations/panels, 75-minute
workshops, and posters.
You are
invited to submit proposal abstracts for
plenary, workshop, or poster sessions on
any topic relevant to medical student
education in psychiatry. Based on
current members’ interests, we would
welcome proposals on leadership
challenges in psychiatric education,
technological tools to enhance teaching,
tips for new directors, dealing with
difficult student situations, or
creative methods for addressing the
stigma of mental illness. Proposals on
other topics are also encouraged.
Abstracts must be no longer than 250
words and list specific educational
objectives. The objectives should
describe the abilities or attitudes
(learning outcomes) that complete the
sentence, “At the conclusion of this
presentation, the participant should be
able to (e.g., demonstrate, recognize,
diagnose, treat, etc. …)” Be as specific
as possible. Don’t say what you are
going to teach, say what you want
participants to learn.
Because
of new CME requirements, we would also
appreciate it if you would submit a
brief biosketch (abbreviated CV) and
disclosure form for every proposed
presenter. Copies of disclosure forms
are attached, or can be downloaded from
the ADMSEP website.
Research or
research-based abstracts must be in the
following form: • Background: Setting
in which the research takes place •
Purposes: Reasons for the research •
Methods: Design of the study, setting,
participants, interventions (if any),
main outcome measures • Results: Key
findings • Conclusions: Including
direct educational applications. •
Funding for the study (if any).

the innovation • Description: Key
aspects of the program or innovation
• Evaluation: Student evaluations or
other measures assessing program •
Conclusion: Including direct educational
applications
Qualitative
descriptions of one or more programs
which are more “editorial” or
“analytical” such as a literature
review, debate, or persuasive speech may
use the following type of abstract. This
should also be the format for task force
reports: • Background: Relevance to
introduction of the topic • Summary:
Key points • Conclusions: What the
audience should take away from the
discussion
Please indicate the
meeting format that you feel would be
best and any audiovisual needs that you

PsychSIGN
(Psychiatry Student Interest Group

regarding their organization:
http://www.psychsign.org/
At the 2005 fall meeting in New York the
ADMSEP Council proposed an amendment to
the organization’s bylaws. The
proposed change would create a
membership category for residents.
The ADMSEP bylaws require that all
proposed changes be announced to the
membership at least 45 days prior to the
annual meeting. This web
announcement, along with an announcement
in the newsletter, serves as official
notice of the proposed change in the
bylaws. The proposal will be
discussed and voted upon during the
business meeting on Saturday, June 24,
2006 in Annapolis.
The proposal calls for the membership
category of the bylaws to be amended to
read “faculty and residents” are
eligible to join ADMSEP. Resident
members will pay annual dues of $20.00.
The dues payment will include access to
the listserv, the ADMSEP newsletter, and
the cost of meals at the annual meeting.
Resident membership will not include a
subscription to Academic Psychiatry.

any, please report them to

The
ADMSEP listserv message archives
have been cleaned-up. That is, most
of the html formatting and other
cryptic clutter within the email
messages has been removed, providing
a for easier reading. Remember,
the archive can be searched by using
key words (see instructions on
start page), e.g. "frontal lobe"
or "psychotherapy".

Several people have mentioned an
interest in having the old ADMSEP
listserv messages available for
on-demand browsing and searching,
i.e. being able to look for
discussions on certain topics.
Thanks to some new software this
interest is now a reality. You can
now look over the past 5 years worth
of listserv discussions online.
Since the listserv is for members
only, it begins in our pw protected
members-only area:
http://www.admsep.homestead.com/.
If you have forgotten the password,
just let us know.
I suggest you read the
directions on this web page before
beginning. And I must mention that
when you do load the actual archives
in your browser as instructed, it is
a big file, even with maximum
compression, and may take a few
minutes to open in your web browser.
Naturally, the faster your internet
connection, the faster it will open
(with broadband takes <1 min). I
will update this archive
periodically. If you have questions,
feel free to let
me
know. Thanks to Ruth Levine,
Jonathan Polan and others for their
ideas.
The deadline for submission of
abstracts for next year's annual
meeting is October 1. Presentation
formats include papers, workshops,
posters, debates, and panels.
Abstracts should be no longer than
one page in length and should
include a narrative description of
the content as well as educational
goals and objectives for the
presentation. Submissions may be
